We are doing three main projects at the moment; the Wikipedia:Kernow page which lists all the towns, villages and existing hamlets in Kernow; a possible update to the main page; and an infobox for UK places which is based on the infobox used on the Sowsnek Wikipedya. The last set of infoboxes was 10 years ago so a lot of modules and things it relies on are being imported. Emblyn II (keskows) 15:38, 28 Meurth 2018 (UTC)

How to edit event for Speak Cornish WeekChanjya

Hello, apologies for not writing in Cornish. As part of my work I'm in touch with Cornwall Council who are running some events for Speak Cornish Week 2020 (22 June to 30 June). As part of that, they've asked if we can run a how to edit Wikipedia workshop. The week itself is fully booked, so we're looking at the option of having the training as two one-hour sessions the week after (dates TBC) and drawing people's attention to it during Speak Cornish Week.

I can talk to people about why Wikipedia is important and the mechanics of editing (ie: these are the buttons to press) and I was wondering if anyone from the community wanted to join and maybe talk for a couple of minutes about the Cornish Wikipedia.

Notifying some recently active editors (hope that's ok): Vishantkv, Aqchampion, Gazamp, Gaudio, Gwikor Frank, Sambrown1993, Sotiale, НСНУ. --Richard Nevell (keskows) 19 Met 2020 da 11:56 (UTC)

Hi, I don't mind helping out but I've only been editing here for a month or two and my Cornish is barely passable so if any of the more experienced editors can do it, I'll yield to them. Thanks, Gazamp (keskows) 21 Met 2020 da 17:16 (UTC)
I'd be willing, but although my Cornish is decent, I don't know a great deal about Wikipedia editing yet. I'm pretty much at the basic "translate an article and add links" stage. Lowena dhis, Gwikor Frank 21 Met 2020 da 20:58 (UTC)
Thanks for the replies, Gazamp and Gwikor Frank. What might be nice is if you could say a little bit about why you started editing? The first of the two sessions will be on Monday 29 June, starting at 4pm (BST). I can send you the details of how to join on the day (we'll be using Zoom), but I'd be happy to have a quick chat about it before hand if either of you want to. Richard Nevell (keskows) 24 Met 2020 da 16:35 (UTC)
Sure, absolutely. Chatting beforehand sounds good to me. Perhaps you could send me an email? [REDACTED] is my address. --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 24 Met 2020 da 22:23 (UTC)
Yeah, same. I think you can email me through Wikipedia? If not I can tell you it here. Thanks, Gazamp (keskows) 25 Met 2020 da 17:11 (UTC)

German broadcast video availble to translate into Cornish and other languagesChanjya

Hi there These videos are availble for translation and reuse from German documentaries at ZDF, and are in use on German Wikipedia:

I've made the same suggestion of translation to the Latin and Welsh Wikipedias. If there is interest I will perhaps try to organise getting transcripts in German / English for translation and addition of target language audio. JimKillock (keskows) 20 Met 2020 da 09:58 (UTC)

Proof of concept, video of Roman roads with German and English subtitles. From here, Cornish subtitles could easily be added, and then a second version of the video with Cornish audio added. Then, the same can be done with any of the other videos, there are around 100.
Das Straßennetz im antiken Rom (CC BY 4.0)
Hey, JimKillock, I had a go at doing this! There should now be playable Cornish subtitles for the Roman roads video you posted here! --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 21:31, 8 Gortheren 2020 (UTC)

Celtic Knot Wikimedia Language ConferenceChanjya

The Celtic Knot Conference takes place on 9 and 10 July. It's an online event and is jointly organised by Wikimedia Community Ireland and Wikimedia UK. There will also be satellite events taking place between 6 and 12 July. The programme is a mixture of live sessions and prerecorded talks.

The conference aims to bring people together to share their experiences of working on sharing information in minority languages. We aim to help people learn how to direct the flow of information across language barriers and support their communities. As in previous years we will have a strong focus on Wikidata and its potential to support languages.

Registration is open now, so please register on Eventbrite.

Online session next week for Celtic language editorsChanjya

Sorry for posting this message in Sasanach! Join us in November for a Celtic Knot-focused community discussion on the next ten years of the Wikimedia movement.

We'll run a 2 hr online meeting for editors and community organisers working on Celtic languages (Breton, Cornish, Irish, Manx, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh) to discuss priorities and wishes we have about the future of these communities. Is improving user experience a priority? How about better safety and inclusion? Or developing community leaders within your wiki? Let's discuss what's most important for your community to thrive.

You don't need to be a top contributor - a desire to help your community, is enough! Hope to see you there. Register by filling in the form below and we'll follow up with joining info a few days in advance. Link to register here. Robin Owain aka Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 13:34, 9 Du 2020 (UTC)

Aqchampion, Boghblogh, Brwynog, DavydhT, DiworthNorth, Gazamp, Gourmas, Gwikor Frank Taking the liberty of pinging some editors so they're aware of the above. Richard Nevell (keskows) 15:56, 10 Du 2020 (UTC)

Great to see so many of you there on Zoom yesterday! A few weeks ago, I started to work with DavydhT on the Wikidata lists. As I have a db of 265 names (mostly from Avionary), and as we have Brwynog (chair of bird naming standards on Cymraeg) I thought maybe we could work on getting new stub articles on birds which the community can develop further? , It's been 11 years since I created one of the first templates on kw-wiki: Skantlyn:Yethow keltek, I also have the bird names in the other Celtic languages, so they too could be added on the articles. I've started a wikiproject: Wikipedia:Wikiproject ydhyn! Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 06:09, 15 Du 2020 (UTC)
There's a little bit on my user page about animals and plants, including a project we did in the Cornish Language Office with zoo animals Devnydhyer:DavydhT/Kyst_Tewes/Ragdres_Milva, some of these articles are only stubs but some actually quite detailed. More recently, I've surveyed the Cornwall Wildlife trust calendars, and noted them as potential articles here: Devnydhyer:DavydhT/Kyst Tewes/Kalendar Trest Bewnans Gwyls Kernow. I'm now looking at the terminology lists for plants and insects that Akademi Kernewek worked on and I added to the dictionary last year. DavydhT (keskows) 08:32, 15 Du 2020 (UTC)
Bendigedig Davydh! I'm preparing templates for a WD infobox on species, and have started a Wikiproject (Wikipedia:Wikiproject ydhyn), so the Talk page can outline our modus operandi! Translation requests etc... Is there a term for 'Wikiproject' in Kernowek? if not, can we coin one? Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 09:10, 15 Du 2020 (UTC)
I've actually been looking at the terminology plants list too! What a weird coincidence. I've been slowly getting the Cornish names into wikidata when I'm not writing my #kwikiwrimo challenge articles. --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 12:40, 20 Du 2020 (UTC)

As an aside from the Wikiproject birds, the code for places and things named after saints is here on Peran. Just change Peran's Qid to the new saint's Qid and it should work on all articles on saints etc. Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 16:13, 15 Du 2020 (UTC)

Semi automated Infobox now on the Rudhek article (image, birdsong audio, aucn classification, map etc). Thanks @Gwikor Frank: for joining the Wikipedia:Wikiproject ydhyn! Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 16:33, 26 Du 2020 (UTC)

Collective / singulative nounsChanjya

One of the things I came across when sketching out possible articles in the area of animals and plants is that some of these are collective nouns which add a -en for the singulative. Devnydhyer:DavydhT/Kyst_Tewes/Kalendar_Trest_Bewnans_Gwyls_Kernow, Devnydhyer:DavydhT/Kyst Tewes/Plansow, Devnydhyer:DavydhT/Kyst Tewes/Hwesker. Should the article title in general be the collective or the singulative (e.g. Gwenen or Gwenenen for w:en:Bee)? DavydhT (keskows) 09:10, 17 Du 2020 (UTC)

My gut is to say collective. You're looking up bees, all of bees, the concept of bees, rather than just one bee. :) --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 12:37, 20 Du 2020 (UTC)
Hi! On cy-wiki, species are always singular; same I think for enwiki, frwiki etc; eg Gwenynen rather than gwenyn (pl). The only exception I can think of are mountains eg Mynyddoedd yr Atlas (Atlas Mountains) and similar. Global bot policy proposal: invitation to a Meta discussionChanjya

Skantlyn:PethauChanjya

Just a heads up that I've created a Wikidata driven infobox based on things, following a request from User:Brwynog - please add this template onto any relevant articles. I've added a few tips and other info on the Skantlyn itself. I've created, on cywiki templates for people - cy:Nodyn:Person and one for places: cy:Nodyn:Gwybodlen lle. So if you like them I can add these too. But in my opinion, getting Skantlyn:Pethau translated should be done first otherwise, you will have more English on kw-wiki than Kernewek! Let me know! I'll change the name of the template as soon as some lets me know what the translation of 'things' is in kw. Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 16:13, 9 Kevardhu 2020 (UTC)

'Taklow' would be Pethau in Kernewek. I've tried transferring over en:Template:Infobox element to kw, and show my progress so far at Devnydhyer:DavydhT/Kyst_Tewes/Elvennow but it's quite complex and there would be quite a lot of terms etc. to translate, and it seems to me as well a relatively simple Wikidata based template might be a bit easier to user. DavydhT (keskows) 20:27, 9 Kevardhu 2020 (UTC)
I've shown a box generated by Skantlyn:Taklow for each of those chemical elements that are listed within the SWF dictionary: Devnydhyer:DavydhT/Kyst_Tewes/Elvennow. DavydhT (keskows) 14:31, 10 Kevardhu 2020 (UTC)

Uploading filesChanjya

Dydh da! Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to upload non-free files to kw-wiki - Special:Upload (which works on en-wiki) is blocked for anyone not an admin. I'd suggest a page where users can request files to be uploaded but from what I can see, kw-wiki only has two admins, neither of whom are that active here. Does anyone know a way to get around this? Meur ras, Gazamp (keskows) 15:28, 29 Kevardhu 2020 (UTC)

Hi. Yes, I've just implemented it on ga-wiki / Irish wiki, as they have 2,500 Irish book covers to upload. As you know, book covers, albums, etc are disallowed on Commons. However, for it to be enabled on a wiki, several long-winded policies etc need to be in place, and the community needs to discuss and approve etc. If this becomes a priority for the community, let me know and, yes, I'll help. Proposal: Set two-letter project shortcuts as alias to project namespace globallyChanjya

Please help translate to your language

Hello everyone,

I apologize for posting in English. I would like to inform everyone that I created a new global request for comment (GRFC) at Meta Wiki, which may affect your project: m:Requests for comment/Set short project namespace aliases by default globally.

In this GRFC, I propose that two-project shortcuts for project names will become a default alias for the project namespace. For instance, on all Wikipedias, WP will be an alias to the Wikipedia: namespace (and similar for other projects). Full list is available in the GRFC.

This is already the case for Wikivoyages, and many individual projects asked for this alias to be implemented. I believe this makes it easier to access the materials in the project namespace, as well as creating shortcuts like WP:NPOV, as well as helps new projects to use this feature, without having to figure out how to request site configuration changes first.

As far as I can see, Wikipedia currently does not have such an alias set. This means that such an alias will be set for you, if the GRFC is accepted by the global community.

I would like to ask all community members to participate in the request for comment at Meta-Wiki, see m:Requests for comment/Set short project namespace aliases by default globally.

Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions about this proposal.

Best regards,

3 WD Infoboxes now workingChanjya

OK, so now we have two Wikidata Infoboxes:

1. the first, Skantlyn:Taklow:

{{Taklow | fetchwikidata=ALL | suppressfields= }}

2. the second is Skantlyn:Person:

{{Person | fetchwikidata=ALL | onlysourced=no | suppressfields= | nationality = [[Image:Flag of Cornwall.svg|25px]] [[Kernow]]}}

3. + Skantlyn:Lle (translation needed for the title 'Place' / 'location'):

{{Lle | fetchwikidata=ALL | suppressfields = }}

Any problems - let me know.

These are not infoboxes where you just copy the above code. This should be disallowed! If the code is added to an article, I suggest strongly, that everything which appears should be translated. That's also the case on the old infoboxes: the fields need to be filled in! The difference is this: on the old infoboxes, the fields needed to be translated / added manually every time; the new Wikidata driven infoboxes only need to be translated ONCE! So what you will be doing, in effect, is to create, over the next few years, a modern, ongoing, ediatble and open Cornish dictionary. Then you will fly! @Llywelyn2000 and Gwikor Frank: Would place be 'tyller' (as in Henwyn Tyller) rather than 'le'? In any case, is there a distinction between the two? Meur ras, Gazamp (keskows) 10:34, 3 Me 2021 (UTC)
Good spot @Gazamp: and you're quite right. All I did last night was knock the extra l off lle to make it Cornish, tyller is likely better though. I checked my instincts with fellow Kerneweger friends and the distinction is connotation and not cut and dry. To us, 'le' seems more general and can be less concrete, whereas 'tyller' is more of a concrete and specific place, a location. So better here! PoliciesChanjya

In English for clarity: the policies of this Wikipedia were never really fully established and the page for them is very out of date. I would like to start a discussion here with a view towards setting the suggested policies as accepted Kwiki policies. I would also like to open the floor to discussion on any additional policies you feel might be useful for us to have. We haven't had any problems yet for which we have had to fall back on policy, but I'd like to get them confirmed if we can to head such problems off at the pass! Meur ras. --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 15:26, 14 Est 2021 (UTC)

For myself, the only policy I would like to add to these is a policy along the lines of mandating that Kernow be used as the country for all articles about things/people/etc. in Cornish and disallowing England as being used in this manner. This hasn't really been a problem so far, but enwiki has a big problem with listing Cornish places as being in England or referring to "Cornwall, England" and I'd like to make sure we can't have that problem here. Your input on wording of this policy, if you agree, would be very helpful. Please add whether you would support this or any comments you may have. I very much want any discussion on policy here to be democratic, particularly where adding policy is concerned. Meur ras. --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 15:29, 14 Est 2021 (UTC)
Very much agree. Not sure of the wording. Perhaps Llywelyn2000 can help. Brwynog (keskows) 16:06, 14 Est 2021 (UTC)
Would also support this. We'd need a bit of a checklist as to what is OK (see the correct/redundant examples here) and what isn't of the different options (and in different contexts) - e.g. Cornwall, United Kingdom has different connotations to Cornwall, England; the way we put things in infoboxes might be different to in plain text etc. Probably worth a separate discussion to be honest. Gazamp (keskows) 18:38, 14 Est 2021 (UTC)
Also, I think it would be really good for us to have a rudimentary deletion policy now we have an admin - we might not need it now, but it's worth thinking about before we have to! Again, a separate discussion would probably be worth it to thrash out the details. Gazamp (keskows) 18:40, 14 Est 2021 (UTC)
A separate discussion for this and for a deletion policy makes sense. Perhaps if I slightly condense the policies we have as working policies now as so:
  • Cornish Wikipedia is not the place for spelling disputes unless it impacts the site.
  • For articles, any orthography is accepted. Do not change the orthography of an article to another one, unless you are making significant edits/additions and are proficient in the current orthography of the article.
  • For categories, the Wiki interface and other organisation/navigation elements, Cornish should be in the Standard Written Form (SWF) using main variants. This will make organisation and navigation throughout the Wiki easier.
...we could discuss supporting/not supporting/supporting with amendments these so that we have a place to start and then go on to further discussions later, then? --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 19:52, 14 Est 2021 (UTC)
Support - I like the balance of freedom of expression and ease of use that these policies give us and I have been operating as if they were set in place anyway tbh. --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 19:54, 14 Est 2021 (UTC)
Support: Thought these had been set in place! In any case, they should be - just makes sense. Gazamp (keskows) 21:09, 14 Est 2021 (UTC)

Following this discussion I have tidied up the policies page. If you've any comments, go ahead! We'll discuss a deletion policy next? --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 14:14, 17 Est 2021 (UTC)

Can the policies page have an English translation too please - my reading isn't quite that good yet! Meur ras, Gazamp (keskows) 16:38, 17 Est 2021 (UTC)
Good shout! Will add it. --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 19:47, 17 Est 2021 (UTC)
Added a translation. Then decided to put the translation in a collapsible template. This means we can keep Kwiki very Kernewek while still helping learners follow what is going on. :) --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 20:04, 17 Est 2021 (UTC)
