Polici dilea

golegi

In English for clarity at all levels: I'm finally getting to circling back to some of the policy stuff we very briefly discussed here. One of them was a deletion policy. So, let's discuss that?

My own opinions are, essentially, that correction/improvement is preferable in almost all cases to deletion. We're not a big enough Wiki to delete short, poor or niche articles and I think that doing so would run counter to what I am always telling new/prospective editors: your Cornish IS good enough and anything is something.

I think that deletion should be reserved for:

  • Pages in the wrong language
  • Exceptionally short articles (one sentence or less) on extremely niche topics

As an example of the latter, this. I didn't delete it in the end, I improved it slightly to this. I do still think this is an article that could be deleted.

Perhaps someone would want to improve things like this, though? I do think that there should be some kind of grace period for articles like this where we try to find someone who is up for the task of adding a couple of sentences to the article and it is perhaps only deleted if this can't be done.

Anyway, I know this was something we wanted to discuss, so please let me know your thoughts. --Gwikor Frank (keskows) 14:24, 28 Me 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bendigedig! That's more or less what we do on cy-Weiki too, Gwikor! A period of grace, a second chance for them or others to improve the article. We have a small banner which we put on the article using the word {{Gwella}} which suggests that that the article should be improved otherwise it could be taken down. We wait a few weeks (I think there's a back-log of a few months actually!) then we delete. We have a two paragraph minimum too. We also delete crap which is obviously done by Google Translate, or as vandalism, immediately. At the end of the day, you as a Wiki can create any rules you like, so don't listen to me! If you need help with banners etc let me know. Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 15:33, 30 Me 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Zoom session for all Celtic language Wikipedia editors!

golegi

Hirneth heb dha weles!

Sorry this message is in English! User:Brwynog (Cornish Wikipedia) and myself are organising a Zoom meeting on Tuesday 7th June at 7.00, and all regular editors at all Celtic language Wikipedias (WPs) are invited. We will be discussing ideas on putting together an Editathon which will be held in September. If you want to join us you will need to email me to get the link.

What's an editathon?

The Cornish and Welsh editors held an editathon together with the Palestinian editors a few months ago. This is what we did at that time.

How to wiki-email?

My email is turned on. If yours is, then all you need to do is go to my user page. Then go to the menu bar on the left, just under the WP logo, down to Tools, then find Email this user. Just let me know you need that you want the Zoom link.

No email?

To turn on your email, go to your preference (Top) to the right of your User name. In preferences, the fist tab is 'User profile': go down to email and add your email. Simply done!

Last resort

Just email me at wicipediacymraeg @ gmail.com (remove the white space)

I look forward to seeing you at this really important meeting! Bring a smile! Yeghes da a lowena dhywgh!

@Gwikor Frank: asks for help on my cywiki talk page regarding Erthyglow chonsus. Diolch i ti Gwikor ! The skantlyn in question is Skantlyn:Erthyglow chonsus, but the code is in Skantlyn:Erthyglow chonsus/Koden which calls up a number of individual tit-bits eg Skantlyn:Erthyglow chonsus/A/1. @Lader Gwiader: I'll take a look at this in a minute, but I've never tried to do this in the past. I have however added 'Ar y dydd hwn... / 'On this day...' which feeds the info alive + relevant to each day. We have Darvosow y'n mis ma so adding a monthly, automated short list could be done quickly. The next stage would be getting one or two bits of information for each day, for (let's say) the next two months. It would be a long term project so that at least 1 new 'On this day...' would appear every day of the year. On the cywiki we try and get half relevant to Cymru, and the rest are international. Let me know if you're interested and we'll make a draft / spoof front page to test. There is also an 'Image a day' on Commons, which can be translated there, and fed into kw-wiki automatically. They're really great images and bring loads of colour. Maybe we should get it on cywiki too, one day! Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 13:04, 16 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dw i wedi chwilio am y sgript a fewnforiwyd heb lwc! Sorry, I can't find anything about getting an automated, random feed into a page; we can easily generate a button for the user to click, but that's no good here! Ymddiheuriadau! Bt I do think 'On this day...' would bring it alive, should you neeed it. Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 14:53, 16 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just made a spoof for your Yey" or Ney"! The important bit is {{Darvosow y'n mis ma/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}}} which has two elements: a Skantlyn and changing {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}, which together call up the relevant monthly info. If you do go ahead, then other months need to be created; we already have around six. @Lader Gwiader: seems to be doing great work with templates; it would be good to have his / her take on developing this home page further. Llywelyn2000 (keskows) 15:59, 16 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That looks great! I think having something that changes might pull people's interest a bit. I also really like the idea of the image a day too, something visual always looks good. Gwikor Frank (keskows) 22:11, 16 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem, thank you so much for looking. I've seen it elsewhere, so I might go an see if I can remember where I've seen it and ask there. Diolch yn fawr am dy help. Gwikor Frank (keskows) 22:09, 16 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There was a random picture of the day on the old Pennfolen, and I had plans to do random articles but I never finished it as I wanted to use full articles not stubs. The code must still be around somewhere. Getting it to display random articles is the easy bit, the issue is having enough good articles with lots of content and blue links instead of red. There are more active users here than 10 years ago so it should be much easier now! --Lader Gwiader (keskows) 06:03, 18 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've created a list of 100 or so articles with plenty of content and links, 40 or so about Cornwall/Cornish themes, 20 on inter-Celtic issues/other Celtic countries, and 40 others. Have you managed to find the code you had? We can then move on to having a round robin of 5 'random articles' each week perhaps. What do you think? Brwynog (keskows) 15:59, 5 Genver 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps rather than have a fully random article, it would be possible to have it choose from a collection of 100 or so articles which aren't stubs. Is that possible? There are plenty of categories with decent size articles now. Brwynog (keskows) 13:08, 18 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we could start with a few articles across 5 categories, perhaps two for Cornwall-related articles, one for other Celtic-related articles, and two for everything else. Then we can add more to the rotation later on, or change it as desired. Lader Gwiader (keskows) 02:47, 20 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great idea, both! Gwikor Frank (keskows) 00:24, 21 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Constructive Editing

golegi

Dydh da oll, yn Sowsnek rag bos kler dhe bubonan:

Following a tidal wave of unhelpful edits by one user, I thought it timely to talk about what I hope are some fairly uncontroversial thoughts on constructive editing, which nonetheless need to be stated, it seems. Discussion is, of course, welcome. If the community disagrees on the whole with the below, fair enough. If we're very much in agreement, it may be worth putting something into policy.

- Do not edit articles just to change legitimate Cornish to different legitimate Cornish. We already have policy on this as regards orthographies, but this also extends to, say, changing diwotti to tavern, or vice versa, or changing 'haval dhe' to 'haval orth', or vice versa. Cornish you don't personally like is not a poor standard of Cornish and this is just a waste of valuable time and effort, besides being likely to cause resentment.

- Editing another user's userpages or sandboxes, even to 'correct' their Cornish is absolutely not acceptable, unless you have been asked to do so (and can provide evidence of this if asked).

Meur ras dhywgh oll, on the whole some wonderful work is being done here, so let's be proud! Gwikor Frank (keskows) 22:06, 16 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Meur ras Gwikor Frank. The editor in question had already received advice about deleting pages from a previous administrator, and had ignored advice from me a number of times. Some of the hundreds of edits to my pages were legitimate, and therefore helpful (nobody wants to publish faulty Cornish), but the editor in question seemed to have no idea about questions of writing style, and insisted on changing every case of what they considered to be a 'mistake'. Thanks also for correcting so many of the edits made. Brwynog (keskows) 22:20, 16 Metheven 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Response to UK Gov's: Minority languages of the nations of Britain

golegi

Dydh da! Once again: apologies for writing in English.

Wikimedia UK wish to respond to the UK Government's 'call to evidence' re its Inquiry on Minority languages. To this end, Wikimedia UK's CEO Lucy Compton-Reid will chair a Zoom meeting to collect our thoughts, and publish our response. Her request follows:

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) of the UK government is currently running an Inquiry on Minority languages, with a 'call to evidence' until 10th March. Details of the inquiry are here:

https://committees.parliament.uk/work/7208/minority-languages/

Wikimedia UK is planning to submit a response to this inquiry, as we see it as a valuable opportunity to emphasise the importance of support for indigenous minority languages. We are planning to highlight the impact that thriving minority languages have on cultural identity and community cohesion, and the role of Wikimedia in enabling indigenous minority language speakers to freely access - or indeed, to contribute to - a body of knowledge and information in their language. However, we would love to include the voices of contributors to indigenous language Wikipedias within our submission, to make sure we are representing a range of views and perspectives. To this end, we are holding a meeting (over Zoom) to discuss the questions posed by the inquiry.

The call will be 12noon - 1pm on Wednesday 1st March and it would be great if you could join us. Do let me know if you can make it and we will send you the zoom link nearer the time. If you can't make the meeting but would like to contribute your views, please do feel free to email us your thoughts on any of the questions.

Please let me know through email / wiki email if you would like a link to the Zoom meeting, which will be held in English.

Akademi Kernewek ID proposal

Dydh da!

Just for info: I've made a proposal for a new Wikidata Property here. It needs fine tuning, but on the whole should be acceptable. Then we can add a few more place-names onto Wikidata. There are around 8,000 altogether, and around 1,200 have already been done. You can see them here - just hit the blue and white button! If the proposed new property is accepted, then adding the others will be much easier. I'll keep you informed!

At the end of the day, these standardised place-names should be added onto all language wikis.

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Keworra testen" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Dyllo an chanjyow". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

Save the date: Celtic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference, September 2024

golegi

Hello all,

We are very happy to announce that the conference dedicated to minoritized languages on the Wikimedia projects will be back for its 7th edition, to be held in Waterford City, Ireland, in September 2024. The exact date will be announced as soon as possible.

Getting back to its roots, in the Celtic languages and nations, the event gathers people from communities and languages that are underrepresented on the Wikimedia projects. It is a place where people working on growing and maintaining their communities can meet, learn from each other, and support each other on topics like community growth, technical tools, or collaboration with partners.

Celtic Knot 2024, will be an in-person event, held in Waterford, Ireland's oldest city which has an abundance of cultural heritage and history. We are currently exploring options to make conference resources (talks, panels, etc.) available to those who are unable to attend in person.

We are currently gathering input from the community to build a conference tailored to your needs: whether you attended a previous edition of the Celtic Knot or not, if you are involved in underrepresented languages on the Wikimedia Projects, please take a few minutes to fill in the community survey, and make sure to share the information with your local group. The survey is open until January 21st. Many thanks in advance!

As we are starting to build the concept and the program, we will regularly improve the existing event pages on Meta and post updates on the talk page of the event.

The core organizing team is composed of Amy O’Riordan (WCI), Sophie Fitzpatrick (WCI), Daria Cybulska (WMUK), Richard Nevell (WMUK), supported by Léa Lacroix (community engagement consultant). If you have ideas or suggestions, if you would like to get involved in the conference, feel free to contact any of us.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Celtic Knot! Best, Richard Nevell (keskows) 11:37, 15 Kevardhu 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi folks, the survey is still open so if you would like to voice your thoughts on the Celtic Knot please do fill in the survey. And thank you if you have already filled it in! Richard Nevell (keskows) 14:35, 12 Genver 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Closing soon! The survey closes on 21 January, so there is still time to fill in the survey and help the organising team develop the plan for the conference. Richard Nevell (keskows) 10:40, 19 Genver 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Issues with neologism

golegi

Sorry for writing in English here, but I feel it's necessary to reach out here.

I'm trying to deal with a historical neologism that has spread it's way across a lot of projects the "late modern period". This term isn't actually used by a historians and is based on a misunderstanding of how the concept of the modern period works. There's a discussion explaining a lot of the details here if anyone's interested: en:talk:Late_modern_period.

I would appreacite if someone could move and rename Oos Arnowydh Diwedhes so that it the "modern period" because that's the term that most historians use these days when referring to the period about 1800 until today.
